Best Way To Go About Learning A New Language
ByRecently I was asked, what is the best way to go about learning a new language?
The truth is, I’ve written an entire book on this topic (which if you are serious about learning a new language, I highly recommend you take a look at, you can see the link below). However, I will give you a few pointers in this article.
Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when learning a new language is to keep it fun. If all you do is look at textbooks and do grammar exercises, you will probably lose your mind in boredom. Besides, you probably did not undertake this great task of learning a new language in order to read textbooks and do grammar exercises. More likely, you chose to learn a new language in order to enjoy a new culture, make new friends, enjoy new entertainment, read books, etc.
So, even if you are just beginning the language, make sure that you set aside time for fun things in your studies. Be sure to read an interesting magazine in your new language or watch a foreign film. Not only will you be doing something you find enjoyable but you will be practicing and learning your new language at the same time! It is a win-win situation.
Second, you should have some organized way of reviewing vocabulary. If all you do is look up new words in the dictionary and the move on, you will find that you come across the same words again and again and yet cannot remember their meanings. There is a very efficient way of memorizing vocabulary that I go over in my book which is out of the scope of this article but I want to emphasize that no matter what you do, you should be doing something to make sure you keep track of the words you are learning. Otherwise, you will be wasting your effort in relearning them every time they come up and this cannot only be a frustrating experience but also a waste of your study time, as well!
Third, use many different materials. The truth is, one software program (like Rosetta Stone or Pimsleur) or one textbook is not going to get you to fluency. It makes sense to attack a language from many different fronts. Not only will there be a lot of overlap which will reinforce vocabulary and grammar for you but you will also experience a variety of styles in the language which you will benefit from.
Well, I hope those three simple tips helped you. Again, if you are serious about learning a new language as quickly as possible without wasting any time, I highly recommend taking a look at my book. Just click on the link below!
