Japanese Textbooks

By admin

Question: “I am looking forward to start studying Japanese but I am completely clueless about where to start and what to use.
I’ve read the blog all Japanese all the time, and it seems the way to go. The guy recommends the book “Remembering the Kanji” but that book doesn’t seem too appellative to me, have you had any experience with it?
I would like to focus most on reading and writing rather than speaking, if you could give me some suggestions I would be thankful.
I have some Japanese material, but I’m not sure if it’s the right material to start with.

Here is a list of my material; if you think I should get something else shouldn’t be a problem acquiring it.

Japanese for busy people I
Pimsleur Japanese I, II, III
(Rather skip it, as I don’t want to become conversational for now, just write and read)
Teach Yourself Japanese
Assimil: Le Japonais sans peine
Japanese Verbs and Essentials of Grammar
(Rita L. Lampkin)
Japanese Grammar by Nobuo Akiyama
Quick Start Japanese! Beginner’s Mini Book
A Guide To Learning Hiragana & Katakana - Kenneth G. & Tetsuo Takagaki
Heisig - Remembering The Kanji 1, 2, 3
Instant Immersion Japanese (4 CD’s version)

Thanks in advance! ”

Answer: The Genki series is a good way to start. Once you’ve finished both volumes, you will have mastered most of the basic grammar of Japanese. After that, you can move on to an intermediate book. I would suggest “An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese” at that point which covers a lot of intermediate grammar and gets you used to reading real Japanese newspaper articles and letters. It also has sections on vocabulary and kanji like Genki so it’s a good all around textbook.

Hope that helps!
