How Many Months To Learn A Language

I was recently asked about how many months it takes to learn a foreign language. This is an important question especially if you’re just beginning your language studies and want to know how long the process is going to take. The answer to this question depends on primarily two factors: your experience with language and your study methods.

Your experience with foreign language is important because if you studied a foreign language before that is very similar to the language you are studying now, you will find that you progress very quickly. For example, I know people who have learned Spanish in 3-6 months after they learned Italian to an advanced level. Since much of the grammar is the same and there is a lot of shared vocabulary, the overlap was great enough to speed up the learning process.

This also counts for English, too. If you attempt to learn a language very dissimilar from English like Japanese or Arabic, you will find that it takes longer  to learn because you have to learn new sentence structure and a lot of the vocabulary is not the same. However, if you learn a language similar to English like Spanish, you will find that the process goes by much quicker.

Additionally, your overall experience with learning foreign languages matters. If you have studied three foreign languages before to an advanced level, you will have an easier time with the fourth language no matter what it is. The reason for this is because your brain is already used to learning new sentence structures and new vocabulary.

Now for the second factor, your study methods are very important. How long you spend studying each day and what you do when you study could make the difference between learning the language within months or within years! I can’t go over everything to do in this article but I will give a few tips. You should be studying a little bit each day instead of one chunk once a week. The little bit of studying each day will cut down on the time you spend reviewing and also keep the language fresh in your mind. Also, make sure you also do fun things in the language like watch movies or read interesting novels. Don’t just do grammar exercises or read textbooks, otherwise your motivation will soon run out. Additionally, you should have a way of recording or keeping track of all the new vocabulary you come across that you want to learn for the long term. If you don’t keep track of it, you will soon find yourself looking the word up again the next time you come across it because you will have forgotten it.

So, as you can see, the language learning process depends on these factors, however, I feel confident in saying that you can learn any language to an advanced level within a year, as long as you have the appropriate study method and are learning well. I gave you some introductory concepts in this article, but if you are really interested in achieving fluency in the shortest amount of time, I highly suggest taking a look at the book I’ve written on language learning.

If you want the fastest method to learn a language so that you will become fluent in a foreign language in a matter of months, learn thousands of words without worrying about forgetting them, master grammar and do all of this in an enjoyable, painless manner then you need to read Learn That Language Now!

How Long Would It Take To Learn French Using Rosetta Stone?

A lot of people who are studying the French language or who are thinking about beginning their studies in French consider buying the Rosetta Stone language learning software. Often, I hear the question, how long will it take me to learn French using Rosetta Stone? Well, unfortunately, if you are looking for fluency in French, Rosetta Stone will not be able to bring you to that level.

Rosetta Stone French just doesn’t teach enough vocabulary and grammar structure to take you to fluency. The Rosetta Stone French program only teaches enough to get you to a basic proficiency level. So, what does that mean? After completing the Rosetta Stone French program, you will probably be able to get the gist of most everyday conversations and be able to make simple conversation.

Now, for many people, this level is all they need. If you are planning a trip to France or just want to be able to make small talk, then Rosetta Stone can be a program that serves its purpose.

However, if you are interested in a more advanced level, such as you want to be able to understand newspapers, movies, novels, etc. or you want to be able to speak at length about different topics with native French speakers, you will need to do a lot of studying outside of Rosetta Stone French in order to reach that high level of French proficiency.

Rosetta Stone French will not take you to fluency by itself but it can be a good product to help you get the basics down, that is, if you like the manner in which Rosetta Stone teaches and you have the money to afford Rosetta Stone (as we know, it is quite expensive). If you are truly interested in reaching a high level of French proficiency, I strongly recommend taking a look at the book I’ve written on language learning since it will show you in detail exactly what you need to do to reach fluency in the least amount of time.

If you want the fastest method to learn a language so that you will become fluent in a foreign language in a matter of months, learn thousands of words without worrying about forgetting them, master grammar and do all of this in an enjoyable, painless manner then you need to read Learn That Language Now!

How Long Would It Take To Learn Spanish Using Rosetta Stone?

Many people wonder how long it takes to learn Spanish using a software program like Rosetta Stone. If you are looking for true fluency in Spanish, Rosetta Stone will not take you there.

Rosetta Stone Spanish unfortunately does not teach enough vocabulary and grammar structure to get you to a fluent level. The best that you can hope to achieve through Rosetta Stone is to reach a very basic proficiency in the Spanish language.

In order to get to fluency in Spanish, you will need a lot more than Rosetta Stone. Rosetta Stone Spanish will be able to get you to the point where you can make conversation about basic topics and be able to understand the gist of most conversations that you will hear between native speakers. For most people, this level is good enough if they are going on vacation or planning on taking a short trip to a country where Spanish is spoken. You can probably reach this level in under half a year of using Rosetta Stone actively.

On the other hand, if you are serious about learning Spanish to a high level or if you are interested in being able to understand newspapers, books, television, movies, etc. then you will need to do a lot of studying outside of Rosetta Stone because Rosetta Stone just does not cover enough material to get to that level. As I said before, Rosetta Stone only covers a basic level and does not reach the intermediate and advanced levels. It is a good start but not good enough for fluency.

If fluency in Spanish is your ultimate goal, then I highly recommend taking a look at the book I’ve written that covers the quickest, fastest way to reach fluency. It will save you a ton of study time and a lot of money in wasted software programs and books. You can leap past all the mistakes I made in language learning over the past 10 years. Besides, Rosetta Stone Spanish is expensive and it makes sense to look at cheaper alternatives.

So, if you want the fastest method to learn a language so that you will become fluent in a foreign language in a matter of months, learn thousands of words without worrying about forgetting them, master grammar and do all of this in an enjoyable, painless manner then you need to read Learn That Language Now!

When Will I Be Fluent?

I often get this question… how long does it take to reach fluency in a foreign language? When will I be fluent? The answer to this question depends on mainly two factors.

The first factor is how difficult or how different the foreign language is from your native language English. Also factoring into this is any other foreign language you may have learned. For example, knowing Spanish will make learning Italian much easier. Or, having studied several foreign languages before will make any new language easier.

Remember that the following hour counts are basic estimates and not exact. They are merely to give you an idea.

For basic proficiency in an “easier” language like Spanish, Dutch, French, Swedish, Italian, etc. it takes about 200 hours of study time. Obviously to get to a more advanced level, a lot more study time is needed but for basic proficiency, 200 hours should get you well on your way.

Basic proficiency in harder languages that are more dissimilar from English like Russian, Polish, Greek, Hindi, Thai, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Czech, etc. will take perhaps 300-400 hours. Again, reaching a higher level will take considerable more time.

Even “harder” languages like Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese will take even longer. It may take you 500+ hours to reach the same level as someone who has studied 200 hours in Spanish. For higher levels of proficiency, even more time is required.

The second factor in determining how long it takes is the method you are using. If you are not using your time efficiently and not advancing in the right manner, it make take you even longer. On the other hand, if you are using a very good method and correct system, it may take you even less time to learn a language than I have put down here.

So, how do you know if you are using the right method or learning in the correct way? I highly recommend you pick up a copy of my book where not only do I cover the quickest method to fluency but I also cover this topic of how long it takes to reach fluency in more depth.

If you want the fastest method to learn a language so that you will become fluent in a foreign language in a matter of months, learn thousands of words without worrying about forgetting them, master grammar and do all of this in an enjoyable, painless manner then you need to read Learn That Language Now!
